A Very Territorial Chihuahua And The New Dog In The House. Help?

The chihuahua isn’t exactly mine, but it lives in the same house I do. I was thinking of getting an Italian Greyhound, and before anyone says anything about that, yes, I am very capable and ready for taking care of it. Is it possible to train the Chihuahua so that he can accept that the new dog will be living in the same house as him? If so, how?

Here’s a site that should help you with your training needs for the chihuahua and the new Italian Greyhound. Look through all the categories to find the ones that meet your needs.http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles…

Chi’s do tend to get along better with their own breed, but I’ve had several rescues that did fine with my other dogs. However, it seems like the Chi you’re living with might be poorly socialized, and that might lead to a problem with another dog in the house. I really don’t know what to recommend, other than bringing the Chi along to meet the dog you plan on adopting, so you can get an idea of what you’ll be dealing with. It might be a less than accurate picture, with trouble starting when the new dog is brought into your home.

    Of course, you can, silly!
Tie the Chihuahua to a stick and let the IG eat it!
Lol, joking, I have a Chihuahua mix myself!
Let them meet in a neutral area after both have been walked for probably 20 minutes (separately), then walk them with one in front of the other for 10 minutes, then switch the other dog in front for another 10 minutes.
When you get them home, if you have a backyard, let the chi loose, but keep the new dog on the leash so that it knows that “right now the yard isn’t mine, it belongs to him.” And after a week or 2, you can let them both loose in the backyard!
Inside the house, keep a constant eye on both of them. If you see either of them growl/snap/bark/take something away from the other, correct them with a loud distracting noise and a firm “NO”
A dog can ALWAYS learn to live with another dog.

You can train the chihuahua to accept the new dog but it takes some time. You need to be patient with the chihuahua during the process:http://www.chihuahuainfoonline.com/2009/…http://www.chihuahuainfoonline.com/2009/…

Just try it & if the Chihuahua has issues than the owner needs to train he/she. It is not your responsibility…if you want a dog I would say go for it….the Chi probably will have issues at first but they should gradually get used to each other, especially if your getting a puppy.

yes, remember to give the Chihuahua equal amount of love. It could get messy if you give the Italian Greyhound more attention. Your Chihuahua will get stressed and will probably rip the tissues, chew on your shoes, etc. He will get cranky… Good luck though!

What i would do, and i have done this with my very territorial poodle, is spray their butts with perfume. Doesn’t matter what it is, so long as it is strong enough to block out their sent. It will take a few days for them to start to get along, but this will help.

    yeesh.
mkay so first off get the other dog.
see if the chihuahua will do anything. if shehe does, slap her/him and tell her “nooo! bad girl sit!
i had the same problem and it worked.

You can make him tolerate it…but I doubt if he’ll ever actually LIKE the idea.
Obedience training. Be the leader of the house. HE has no choice…if you’re a strong leader, that will be clear.

yes you need to disipline the dog to undertand whats going on. give them eaqual attention and dont feed one treat and not the other
