Adult Italian Greyhound Still Not Potty Trained?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I have a 5 year old Italian greyhound female. I got her when she was 9 weeks old. She is now 5 years old and still not potty trained! I let her out ever 2 hours even at night time, she will potty out side and then come in side and use the bathroom. I have read so many books on potty training dogs. She some times used puppy pad, but not all the time. She is utd on her shots. A very health dog, with a bad habit.
I love her so much but I’m getting tired of cleaning up pee and poop.

Well I have heard before that italian greyhounds were one of the hardest dog breeds to potty train, but dont let this discourage you. If I were you, I would buy a crate (if you dont have one) and start training her all over again like you would crate train a puppy. Put in crate, take out to go pee, do whatever in the house for an hour, go pee again, put in crate, etc. You want to try to take her out as often as possible, and praise her LOTS when she does her biz outside. Also, let her sleep in the crate because dogs usually wont pee/poop in their crate because it is like their sleeping place that they dont want to get dirty. Hope this helps!
Install a doggie door and teach her how to use it. My doggie door has been a blessing. With 9 dogs nobody has to go at the same time.
You could enlist the help of a trainer to teach you how to teach your dog or you can take that money and get a really good doggie door.
I love doggie doors.
One of the hardest breeds to potty train….but it can be done.
IGs are extremely sensitive, and it is very important to ONLY use positive reinforcement when housebreaking. Being harsh or scolding an IG because you get frustrated will make it much harder to train the dog.
My IG is the same way. Today we went on a 30 minute walk when I came home from work. After I put her inside I went out to my car to get my purse (10 seconds) and she had piddled inside. This breed isn’t into the whole wanting to please its owner. She knows that she did wrong before I even find it because I can tell by the look on her face when she has done it. Then it’s just hunting down the pee or poo. Other IG owners I know have gotten a doggie door (they still have accidents). BEFORE I got an IG I would have just told you to retrain (and just assumed that you were a bad owner), but now that I have an IG I know how you feel. I have had dogs before but this is the only one that seems to pee or poo in the house on purpose.
