Constant Barking By My Italian Greyhound
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I need help. I have had my italian greyhound girl for about 3 years. She is almost 6 yrs old. Whenever she sees a dog she goes crazy i can calm her down. I don’t have a large backyard so I have to let her off the leash so she can run but if she sees a dog she will run after them and barking like crazy she won’t bite them she just goes crazy.
If she sees a dog she won’t respond to come until after she barks at it for a minute or two. You may tell me she just can’t go off the leash but she needs to run off her energy. I need training method please.

An Italian greyhound is small enough to take the worst of it if she bark at the wrong dog. I agree she needs to run off her energy, but off leash is asking for trouble. She needs to learn to act proper around other dogs. When I walk mine I walk by many dogs barking in their yards. I do not allow mine to lunge, bark, wine or even look at the other dogs. I make them sit and ignore the dogs. I use the leash and my hand to snap them out of any focus on the other dogs.
She needs to learn some manners in aproaching other dogs. Take her for leashed walks and introduce her but make her be quiet, calm and seated. If she gets crazy, walk her away til she gets calm then try again.
This will take a lot of practice. Please don’t let her loose until you get this down.
You may use a food bribe at first when you see a dog coming. You may consider installing a long trolley run to keep her from running away.
Watch Cesar Milan the dog whisperer.
Don’t let her off leash until she learns to come when called. She should be trained to stop dead in her tracks and come back to you. She will meet her match one day and get chewed up.
A 30′ to 50′ lead will also give her plenty of footage to run and not totally out of your control.
Yikes!
An Italian Greyhound off leash is just asking for trouble. God forbid she sees something she wants to go after, she will be GONE.
Long walks have just as much value as a run, and if she needs to run, you need to find a fenced in area for her to do so.
When she barks stop her right away and when she starts amke her calm and submssive. Then praise her or give her a treat when she is calm so she knows that it’s better to be calm.
