Greys are bred more for short distance running - not long. I would talk to Greyhound owners/breeders first and see if they recommend it. I say no.

They are more sprinters than long distance runners...I've owned one..they are very sweet & loving but can be needy & neurotic. Rescuing one is your best bet, as there are not too many greyhound breeders out there....good luck!

We are owned by 4 wonderful and unique greyhounds. Our 8 year old male was a prolific racer, but likes nothing more than to relax for up to 22 hours on his nice, fluffy cushions. Our 2 younger females will run about 1/2-1 mile with my husband, but it is a battle of wills when they are on the last lap. Our youngest (2 1/2) would not even think about running outside of her yard or after her stuffies. Most retired racers run on sand, so be prepared to toughen up their pads before taking them on pavement in addition to training them slowly to change from sprinters to longer-distance runners. Good luck and hope greys enter your heart and home soon---you won't be disappointed. They are marvelous companions and will change your life!

No they don't usually run long distances. They are also sight hounds, so they always need to be on leads and can run up to 40 mph. It also depends on the dog. I have one who loves to run and I had one who didn't like to run once he was retired. He took retirement seriously. They are great dogs but are mainly couch potatoes once they are retired. They spend most of their days sleeping. They are a wonderful breed. But just make sure you do your research. They are not like other breeds. Their blood work is different from other dogs. But they are not the type of dog you will want to use when training for a marathon.

If you were to rescue a younger greyhound, say a 2 - 3 year old, he'd love going on long runs with you. But you do have to use common sense - never run in the heat of the day, take water for the dog, keep him off pavement as much as possible because it's very hard on a dog's feet.
And if you learn to do massage and possibly Tellington Touch, that would be great for any dog who's a running partner.
When my greyhounds were much younger, they were able to go long distances and loved it.
