Does Anybody Know About Greyhounds?

Well we were in petsmart yesterday, and they had these people there who were selling retired greyhounds and my mom said if they don’t get sold, then they put them to sleep! I just think that’s really sad, i mean i know its a business for them but still!
Anyway, we already have a toy poodle and i’m sure my dad won’t let us get a greyhound lol, but i really want one probably when i get out of college or something(i’m still in high school now). Are they good pets? They seem really lazy and sweet. Do they shed? Are they better outside dogs or inside dogs? Easy to train? Our poodle doesn’t shed and we are not allergic to her, but i am EXTREMELY allergic to cats, would i be allergic to these dogs too?
Just whatever you can tell me would be great! Thanks in advance!

Well do you like the Greyhound here>>>largehttp://www.dogsindepth.com/hound_dog_bre…
Or do you like the italian greyhound here>>>smallhttp://www.breederretriever.com/photopos…
    *Are they a good Pet?
Most are quiet, gentle animals. They are not high-energy dogs. An adult greyhound will stay healthy and happy with a daily walk of as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Greyhounds have been referred to as “Forty-five mile per hour couch potatoes. Greyhounds are quiet, well mannered and loving, They are gentle & patient, making them wonderful pets and companions
    *Do Greyhounds Shed?
Greyhounds do shed but do not have undercoats and therefore are less likely to trigger people’s dog allergies (Greyhounds are sometimes incorrectly referred to as “hypoallergenic”). The lack of an undercoat, coupled with a general lack of body fat. If you are not allergic to dogs then you should be fine! :) Greyhounds are clean, with minimal shedding
*Are they better outside dogs or inside dogs?
Greyhounds are susceptible to extreme temperatures, and most sources recommend that Greyhounds be housed inside
    *Are they Easy to train?
Greyhounds are easy to train & are very social
*Can you get a puppy just as a pet, or do you have to race them?
Yes you can have a Greyhound as a pet you do not have to race them like i said some where above in aonther question……

They are lovely pets. Laid back normally but love to run. You have to have fenced yard and keep them on a leash when off your property or they will take off running and keep going. They are very sensitive to cold, so they are pretty much inside dogs and need coats during cold weather. They are fairly easy to train. They are light shedders. Allergic to cats doesn’t mean allergic to dogs at all.
You can buy a puppy greyhound but it won’t be saving a retired racer.

they shed a little trickle almost year round but not huge amounts of hair – allergies are a wobbly subject and may well depend on how senisitive YOU are… they have too little body fat to manage well outside (and need soft beds least they get pressure sores) older dogs are typically layed back & lazy but the pups are typically live wires (think He*# on wheels) getting a pup from a rescue is not going to be easy (they get few and with the energy of pups tend to send them to experienced homes) a show breeder may well let you have a pup

    Hello,
Greyhounds are affectionate to family. Although, they have a reputation of having a high energy level, but in reality they are couch potato dogs. They do well in children specifically older children but still need a supervision by an adult. Likewise, they do very well in other dogs. They weren’t selling retired Greyhounds. That is not allowed within Petsmart. They are adopted out and I can assure you that they are not put down if someone doesn’t adopt them right away. The rescues that use Petsmart are typically no kill and rescue the retired Greyhounds after they are dumped at a shelter and they are contacted to obtain the dog. Greyhounds are amazing dogs. They are gorgeous, charming, playful, and all around wonderful animals. All dogs should be indoor dogs. Greyhounds are very social and would need to be indoors. Yes, Greyhounds are very intelligent, however it depends on the consistency of the owner and the time they spend training the animal. If you are allergic to cats, that does not mean that you will also be allergic to dogs.
You do not have to race a Greyhound o.O Most people that own Greyhounds have them as strictly pets, save for the show dogs, agility, obedience, etc.

i own a greyhound and she is the sweetest dog ever! They shed less than a normal dog does and they are inside and outside dog. My greyhound only took 2 weeks to become house broken and 1 week to learn simple tricks. You would not be allgergic to these dogs. I love my greyhound .. we rescued her from the shelter and she had these special marks around her eyes that looked like eye liner and it was soo pretty! You can ger a puppy and not race it but they do need a lot of exersice but they are lazy at times. I love having a greyhound and you would too!

My husband and I wanted to adopt a greyhound about 22 years ago and didn’t. We just adopted one last March. He is marvelous. He has no dander like our other dog and does not shed too much. If we brush him daily, it helps tremendously. My son and I are also allergic to cats and our dog is no problem.
The group from which we got our greyhound does not euthanize the dogs. Once they are accepted into the group, they are found a home. He is a wonderful pet. He sleeps a lot, is very attentive and very appreciative of the walks we are able to give him. He is definately an inside dog. For a big dog, he is rather comfortable in whatever space is available.
Good luck. I hope someday you will have your greyhound.
