Gross Dog Question…………?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
….. Got a greyhound, who doesn’t lift his leg when he wee’s, and always ends up weeing on his front legs, which means everytime I take him out I end up having to wash his legs. Can dogs be trained to lift their leg or is it something they do or not. He’s 5. Never had this problem with dogs before, he’s incredibly lazy and docile…I think he just cant be bothered.

A lot of male dogs “squat” slightly to urinate, most never squirt far enough to hit their front legs. The only time I see males lift their legs is to “mark” a tree or a lamp post after they have scented another dog there, basically putting their calling card over another, however, to simply urinate they squat. If he hasn’t picked his leg up by now then he’s not going to. Dogs are clean animals and don’t like to “mess” on themselves even my female lab mix picks up one back leg as she squats so as not to pee on herself.
He just sounds lazy and maybe doesnt’ realize he’s peeing on himself. Not sure what you can do to stop him from peeing on himself.
Good luck
Lifting of the leg is a learned behaviour, dogs do it by observing other dogs doing it. Full male dogs are more likely to copy that behaviour than neutered dogs and some dogs (even full males) do not learn to lift their leg at all. Also as it’s a behaviour learned during puppyhood it is unlikely that your dog will start lifting his leg now.
HaHa, sorry, your description was just funny.
I had a Lab that didn’t lift his leg to pee…….and a female dog that DOES!
How odd is that!
I honestly don’t think you can “train” him to lift his leg to pee. But others might know something I do not.
Have you tried maybe keeping a pack of baby wipes inside the door and when you bring him in you can just use one of those to clean him. would be easier than trying to shower him or wet a wash cloth everytime.
Best of luck!
As puppies all males squat to pee.
First do you have other dogs, males, as this is a sign of being submissive as well.
The ALPHA will mostly always lift his leg while the other males squat.
As for peeing on his front legs, lol, the boy must have pretty good aim.
Good Luck and God Bless
lol, my bf teased me because I tried to lift my dog’s leg for him to teach him how to do so when he was a puppy … but he is now 2 & barely lifts it…he usually gets his back legs if he gets anything..but he’s gotten pretty good about not getting it on himself..he just looks like a sissy , lol
Sometimes it’s hard to get your dog to lift it’s leg, some just don’t. I’m not sure if there is anything you can really do.
If the dog seems overly docile, you may want to take him to the vet, it can be a sign of heartworm.
ha ha bless….i heard it all now a dog to lazy to lift his leg to pee…i don’t think you can train it to though its an instinct maybe you could speak to like an obedience Trainer my neighbour is one i will ask for you
greyhounds have long legs and a long back, hes more comfortable toileting this way.
also neutered dogs tend to squat, even if they lifted before.
maybe try baby wipes to clean him off if it save you hassle.
Sometimes when a male dog is spayed too early they do not cock their leg. It is a trait that develops for them to get their urine higher for scent marking. Sorry but your dog will probably never lift his leg.
Lifting the leg is a dominance thing. Sometimes, if you expose him to other male dogs, the will start to lift their leg when they go.
You can’t train him to lift his leg. He learns it from being around other male dogs..
Take him to doggy park, maybe he can pick up from others.
you cannot train him to lift his leg but maybe u can teach him an more effective squat. how silly is this dog.
