How Do I Get To My Dog To Go Potty Outside When It Is Raining?

I have a 2yr greyhound mix. She is trained to go to the bathroom outside but when it is raining she refuses. She won’t even go down the hallway to the back door. At first I tried standing out in the rain and acting like I wanted to play with her, she wouldn’t come out. Then I tried pulling her outside and she runs right back in. She just won’t go. She act as though the rain is poison. It is only really a problem when it is raining all day. She has gone 12 hours before without going. When it get to about 8 hours I put her on a leash and just make her stay out side with me. This really sucks because sometimes it still takes about 15 min. before she realizes that I’m not taking her back in until she goes and the whole time I am getting rained on. Sometimes she just won’t go.

Ut oh…something tells me when she was a puppy, and it was raining you didn’t make her go out in it to go potty. So, now it’s time to pay the piper. Get an over sized umbrella, big enough for both of you, and go out with her. Also, you might try getting her a raincoat…some light thing made of plastic so she stays dryer. If she’s not used to wearing any clothing, then practice putting it on her in the house and having her walk around in there with it on a few times, so she gets used to it.

push her out and make sure she stays out till she goes, if she is voice trained keep repeating the command “go potty” or whatever you use.

mine also will go out front in one spot as soon as she hits it. while she has to smell every blade of grass in back.
I take my schnauzer into the middle of the yard on a lease with an umbrella and we stay there until she is done.

My Aussie is that way too, He hates going in the rain. I used to go out with an umbrella and stand in the front yard until he went. I would walk away from the house so he knew I wasn’t going in. He was soaked but got the idea..keep trying. Does she like water ? Like getting baths or playing in pool, etc ? She may be afraid of it. After you take her out, try toweling her off really good to try her before going back inside. And make sure to praise her once she goes.. Reward the good behavior..
