How Do You Train A Dog To Stop Taking Things Off Of Tables?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
our dog , is not actually ours, he’s a foster greyhound. greyhounds are hard to teach because they are so timid, but not this one. he is huge and muscular, so we can’t pull him anywhere. telling him “no” will not help, he just brushes it off and walks away.
this dog keeps taking things off of desks, tables and counters. we yell at him and squirt him with water, nothing is helping. we can’t use crate training because he needs to be in a crate when we leave the house or else he will tear apart the house, and at night or else he wakes us up in the middle of the night. please tell me ways of teaching this dog that taking things and chewing on them is not okay, and that he can still have some puppy in him with out terrorizing everything. he needs to be adopted at some point, and it’s our job as the fosters to make sure he is a good family dog.

When he reaches up on a table snap out a short loud “NO!” and then redirect his attention to something he is allowed to do. When he listens praise him somethin’ aweful. He will soon learn that it is more beneficial for him to NOT steal things.
Or, as we do at our house, don’t leave things laying out…. a place for everything and everything in it’s place.
Try putting something that tastes sour but not harmful on anything that he can reach. That way he’ll figure out that taking things off of tables isn’t good.
everytime u catch him doing it
pop his nose
and tell him hes bad
or sray his nose with a mixture of water and vinegar
put spices on the objects that you put on table so the dog won’t bit it
