I Am Considering Buying A Jack Russel Puppy, Any Advice On Training ?

I also have a 7 year old rescue greyhound (male) very good with most other dogs apart from large black black dogs. What would be the things to look out for training a jack russel. Also what to ask when buying one and what to do first when you first get them home, any specail advice. Thanks.

Wow, where do I start! First check out Russell Rescue, there’s lots of these little guys who need a good home because the wrong people wanted them for all the wrong reasons. Do a lot of research and make sure that this is the right breed for you. The key is patience, and lots of it! To tell you all I know would take days, cause I have 3, or should I say they have me! My life has been total chaos for the last five years but my cup runneth over! JRTs are thr most amazing little dogs that you’ll ever encounter, they are highly intelligent as well as highly energetic. Need lots and lots of exercise as well as lots of attention. They get bored very easily. Mine are 3, 4 and 5 years old. People either love them or hate them! Feel free to email me and I’ll be glad to tell you the story of my life with Jack Russells! If you take one into your heart, I guarantee you will never be the same! A loyal friend and companion for the rest of your life!

Have you considered adoption instead? There’s an abundance of JRT’s in shelters because many owners don’t know what they’re getting themselves into before adding this breed to their household.
Jack Russell have TONS of energy. If you work long hours, you should definitely consider doggy day care or a dog walker during the day. They require a lot of exercise, and they can be extremely hyper dogs.
Get your pup into basic puppy classes. You may want to look into agility courses too, such a good way to channel that energy. Our JRT is extremely intelligent, but he was definitely a hand-full as a puppy. I always encourage crate training to avoid chewing and housetraining issues. Jack russells have a huge prey drive too- consider that if you have small pets. Mine gets along great with our cat, but he has killed moles, birds, and mice in the backyard.
Do you know what gender you’re planning on getting? Generally, opposite sexes work best. It all depends on each dog’s personality though. Your best bet is introducing the prospective pup with your greyhound to see how they react to eachother (on neutral grounds).

Jacks are high energy dogs. They have special exercise needs. They still retain their working instincts and may chase and kill small animals so it will be very important to train your Jack right off the start.I would definitely advise getting a trainer right away as this dog gets distracted very easily.Consistence and patience is needed with this breed.

You won’t regret it!!! I wasn’t all that struck on them until my girlfriend wanted one – of course we got one ha ha – and i’ve been in love with them ever since! They are so easy to train but they are head strong and wilful so from the get go – YOU are boss – as long as you remember that, everthing else will fall in line ha ha ha. Oh, another thing to remember – and one to NEVER forget – keep him / her well away from badger setts and rabbit warrens – if they go down them you’ll be there for days!!! Good choice of dog, so loving, so loyal, so playful, a real top dog.

Depends on the energy level of the JR your thinking of getting.
CRATE TRAIN every dog for the first couple of days after its been brought home

To get a very lively breed like this you need to make sure that you are able to provide it with LOTS of exercise or else they tend to get destructive, snappy and fat.
I’m sure you must do a fair amount for your greyhound, but jack russels twitch all the time to do something – they need to be exhausted, daily :)
That would be my only concern.
They can get really nasty otherwise.
