I Have A 6 Month Old Puppy. She’s A Mutt, Not Sure What Breeds?

she’s mixed with. My husband thinks she has greyhound in her. We just got her last night and she seemed very docile but two hours ago she lunged at one of my cats and looked like she was going to bite him. Has anybody had any experience with this? Can she be trained not to hurt my two kitties if she has a hunting dogs instincts?

Greyhounds have a lot of what is called prey-drive. This means that they will instinctively chase and possibly kill things that move around a lot. That is the reason they chase the mechanical rabbit in dog races. And while many different breeds will chase cats, the type of breed does matter for whether or not they will kill the cat.
Most dogs can be conditioned to accept household cats with proper training.
You can use the MetaMorphix canine heritage breed testing kit to genetically determine the exact breed makeup of your dog. http://www.metamorphixinc.com/products2a…

hmm this is a hard one. can u find out what her mother and father were? or train her not to hurt the kitties. everytime she does sumthing to them, punish her. but she might not have those instincts if shes not a greyhound, so find out somehow. go to the vet too and find out!

I have a 3 month old puppy and I believe it is a Lab mixed with Boxer. It’s the sweetes little thing , but it loves to bite. I have 5 cats and he lunges at them and now is trying to bite them. Put him on a leash and let him sniff the cats. Whenever he tries to bite or lunge, jerk on his leash and yell no. That’s slowly working for me. Good luck!

you should take it to a training school, petsmart offers pet training and they can teach it to not attack other pets you have

Don’t worry it was probably just a puppy seeing a wagging tail and pounced not meaning any harm. I have a beagle that loves my cats. As long as th dog grows up with them it’ll be fine, you have no reason to worry.

I have the same problem going on right now-first of all I wouldn’t be too worried about your cats-they will show the puppy who’s boss. She was probably just trying to play, but if not, you should be able to teach her not to attack the cats. Just say no in a deep firm voice if you think she is trying to hurt them and put her in a “time out”, the idea is to make her realize that every time I go after the cats I get taken away from the fun. Also make sure your cats have a place to go away from the puppy, and give them lots of attention and don’t leave them alone together until everyone gets along.
    GOOD LUCK

Just a side note: I don’t recommend Petsmart for this kind of training. This is a little over there head, quite honestly. But I do recommend training. Try a place called Dog Days…you can look them up online I am sure. They do wonderful things for pets with behavioral problems such as your dogs. Also just look in the phone book for other trainers in your area. If you take it to your local vet they should be able to tell you the breed and the possible behavioral issues (other than this one) that you can expect, that way you can nip them in the butt in the future. Hope that helps

It’s important to understand that some breeds, greyhounds included, have a MUCH stronger instict to chase small animals. The younger the puppy the easier it would be to teach it NOT to hurt the cats when a game of chase begins. I’m wondering what the circumstances of the “lunge” were. If the cat was sitting quietly by, it would really worry me. I wouldn’t be as worried if the cat had been running by. As far as being trained not to hurt the cats…that’s another question. I would never leave them loose and unsupervised. If one of the cats were to run it would most likely spark a chase that can easily get out of hand. I also suggest that you talk to some breeder/owners of greyhounds and ask them. I’m sure there is a greayhound yahoo group that would be more than willing to help you understand that part of your dog’s make-up.

It doesn’t matter what breeds are in her. She’s a dog, going to chase cats until they are trained not to. Put your dog on a leash and hold her, let the cats come up and rub on her and praise her for not doing anything. Snap the leash when she tries to do something and tell her “No”. I had a dog that would kill cats, but if they were mine she would leave them alone, because they belonged in her yard. When I use to get a new cat, I would put the cats up to this dogs face and make her smell the cat and tell her no. She never bothered them. She was a husky. Now I have cocker/lab cross and he leaves the cats alone as long as they are inside, but once outside he chases them, not to hurt them though. If he catches up to one he nudges them and runs off. Like a game of tag.
