Looking To Find A Good Breed For A Household With A 3 Yr Old-preferably Medium-large To Large, But Not Huge!?

We had a house fire in oct/04 and lost our 2 cats & 2 dogs. We’re ready to have housepets again. It’s a no-brainer with the cats, but, we will be introducing my munchkin to dogs, since she is too young to remember the ones we had. I am curious as to what are good breeds to have with young children. The 2 dogs we had were very old and were not threats to the baby. One was a cocker spaniel, the other a golden retriever/daschund mix (imagine a retriever with 3 inch legs-he was just too cute!). I am a firm believer that children should grow up with a companion or two if at all possible, and I am ready to start over again with a new dog.
I will definitely be looking to adopt, and I am not sure if I want a puppy, or one that is grown and house-broken already.
We have also been investigating retired greyhounds, but they are kind of iffy with cats.
I will have to find something soon as this is an incentive for potty training that IS WORKING!!!
Do NOT want any small yippy yappy things!

My daughter is 3 1/2 and we have a boxer. We will never ever have any other type of dog. Boxers are wonderful (this is our second)! He is our daughters best friend. He is very protective of her and becomes depressed if she isn’t home. He sleeps in her room and follows her everywhere. When my mom comes to pick her up, he will sit behind the car so she can’t leave – I have to drag him in the house. They are a really sweet breed and are wonderful! Both of ours have had this kind of personality and every boxer I have been around has been this way. They are widely known for being family dogs and wonderful with kids. Both of ours were fine with cats and we never owned one. There are boxer adoption agencys everywhere and you can look for any breed at petfinder.org
    Good Luck!!!

Labs/Goldens are good w kids – also mutts tend to have the better tempermants than pure breds. If you look to adopt an older dog just get one that lived in a house w other children and pets before (w/ out any problems) otherwise I would go for a puppy who can then “grow up” around your child. Young children can be pretty tough on a dog but a puppy would be up for the rough housing!

    we have a german boxer.
she is 6 months now and my son 2 1/2.they love each other so much.
boxers are really great with kids and they sure arent no little dog yet they arent huge.they also do good in a appartment if you give them enough outside time or play with them inside.
    we love our boxer!
    good luck finding your dog

    we have a boxer
she is wonderful with my 2 yr old
boxers are wonderful pets for children as they are loving and protective but in no way mean but very playful
i’d say get a puppy something housebroken though like 5 months old

Border collies make excellent kid dogs. I grew up with them and I now have a 1 1/2 yr. old male border collie who not only adores my 15 month old daughter, but is very protective of her. He lets her pull on his ears, roll around all over him, etc…and never growls or tries to bite her. Not to mention, border collies are very smart dogs. Probably a little to smart for their own good. Good luck trying to find the perfect pet.

We have a sheltie who has been wonderful with our son. He lays outside my son’s door at night until morning. If my son is on the floor playing, the dog is laying right there next to him. And he is so tolerant of my son if he should hit him or pull his tail, etc. We were a bit worried because we had the dog before we brought our son home, so we weren’t sure how he would react, but the dog acts like a surrogate parent to our son! It’s great to watch and if ever in the same situation again, I would get another sheltie.
P.S. The dog is also tolerant of our annoying african gray parrot. That says a lot. :)

Labs or retreivers or mixes of the two with smaller breeds are great for children. Go to the local animal control and get a mutt. They make the best pets. I used to work at a Vet hospital in college… rescue dogs make the most loyal pets ever. It’s like they know you saved them… even if they were puppies.

Beagles make great pets, they are good with children and can be good with cats too, check with your local animal shelter for one,You wouldn’t want a puppy as you already have your hands full with a child, you don’t need two.Maybe a 2 or 3 yr old would be better, the only thing is beagles like to roam and they are bottomless pits when it comes to food. But they are adorable and so good with kids.

  10. dee g says:

Labs are good dogs. But have you checked out your local pound. Let them know what your looking for and they can help match a perfect match for you. I DO NOT suggest a beagle. Yes they are loving dogs, but as I have one and a 10 year old. The biggest thing is they are hunting dogs they love to chase and Alley is always going after my sons legs. They require ALOT of excerise and are very stubborn. I wouldn’t trade her for the world. But for a small child I wouldn’t suggest them. Good luck to you.

  11. Sylvia says:

Why don’t you try contacting your local humane society or ASPCA to see if they have a professional available you can talk to about breed compatibility. I know that here in CT there are some great people at the Humane Society and that they keep an animal behaviorist/trainer on staff. I don’t blame you about the small yippy puppies!!!!

we have a German Shepard. we got him as a puppy and he is well adjusted to my boys and only plays as ruff as the boys let him

  13. BobTheBl says:

Try a Labrador or a Golden Retriever…GREAT pets for little kids!

  14. peppered says:

We got a Shih-tzu bichon, frise, maltese cross. He’s not that big, and isn’t snarly. Obviously it takes a little while to teach them basic obedience, but he is very content and loves playing with people so i would recommend.
But all dogs are different no matter what breed. I would suggest watching the dog and how it reacts and asker the breeder about it before buying.

  15. maxtonam says:

Labs/goldens, those are the best and any mix of them is generally good. You need to stay away from the pit bulls and breeds with bad histories, not that all of those dog are bad but that they do have a past and they increase your home owners insurance.
