Goldenly Addicted, please read for comprehension.
Anyway, this is very cool! If I were you, though, I wouldn't fixate on the breed - I'd go on an internet shopping spree!! What fun. Just plug your zipcode into petfinder and type in dogs and then....start looking.
I was helping my sister once to find a dog and I fell in love with a couple that I found and I really wished I could have one! The one I remember most was a Golden Retriever/Beagle mix. It was medium sized (maybe 40 lbs) and had the sweetest face I've ever seen.
That's why you should do this yourself, because you never know what you'll see there. I'm jealous...lol

Labrador ticks all the boxes for you. I know people say they are friendly to everyone they meet, but they are actually very protective of their owners (particularly kids). If a stranger came up to you and looked in any way threatening a Lab would be a good one to have by your side. At the same time they can be quite boisterous, so some training would be good. If you already know Greyhounds and Shepards then the size of a Lab shouldn't be an issue. Good Luck with whatever you get.
By the way don't let people tell you that you HAVE to buy from a shelter - shelters do an amazing job (I have an ex-racing Greyhound, and presumably yours is too, so you have already done a good deed), but if you want to be able to tell exactly what a dog will turn out like then a good breeder and a pedigreed dog can give you peace of mind. At your age you don't need to be dealing with a dog which may have some issues because of the way it has been treated. As long as you are determined to love and look after this dog all its life then you are not going to be a bad person for not giving someone elses problems a home.

Just go with your dad to an animal shelter for dogs and rescue a puppy or an old dog who loves you and is needing a family.

go to the shelter and meet some dogs. It's possible that one will jump out as being the right dog for you. Mutts are great, because they tend to be both very smart and very healthy.

Im glad you made the choice to adopt! I can picture you with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are all of the above of what you listed! (:
I actually own one my self! They are amazing, beautiful, and calm. I love em'!
Do your research before owning this breed. And good luck!

I think a good dog for you should be a maltese, except they are very protective so the bark real loudly. However they are everything you want in a dog. But to be honest you shouldn't care about breeds once you go into the pet store, you will find your best friend no matter what breed it is
hope this helps!
