My Dog Has Trouble Going “potty”?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I take my dog out every 2-3 hours. He is a large greyhound, about three years old. He was never been potty trained because he was a race dog before we got him. When I take him out, he does not go to the bathroom. He doesn’t go in the house either. It takes like four or five tries, going out every half hour, before he goes. He drinks a lot of water.
Can anyone help me, or let me know if this is normal?
thanks

Greyhounds are crated at the track except to go to the bathroom. They are let loose in turn out pens to do their business. Then back to the crate. So some greyhounds can hold themselves for a long time. Some have a hard time going when they are on a leash. They aren’t used to going when someone is watching them, plus trying to go while on a leash. Each greyhound I own, (5), if the don’t go, they go back to the crate for a while, and then we try again until they go. I recently had a foster girl here that could hold it all day. But after a few days, she learned the “routine” of when to go. It has worked for all 5 of mine.
How old is your dog? A mature dog only needs to poop twice a day. Usually no more than that. A puppy goes about 3-4 times, and pees about 10 times a day. But a mature dog will hold the pee and go about 3-4 times a day. So pooping once or twice is normal for a full grown dog. I would keep track of exactly what time of day he is going. Evenings? Then make his longest walk at night. If it is mornings, make the morning trek the longest walk.
He will get it eventually! He wants to please you! So make SURE you tell him Good Poopie! Or Good Potty! when he poops! And he will understand and associate the word Poopie or Potty with doing his business!
Good luck! And So wonderful of you to adopt a Race Dog!
If you have any douts see a vet. Dogs can hold thier water for up to 6 hours.
im thinking he has a bladder infection or a blockage in the digestive tract. try visiting a vetrinarian
It’s possible that he doesn’t have to go when you take him out.. It won’t hurt to take him out every 2 or 3 hours but if he doesn’t have to go, he isn’t going to go..
maybe he could be constipated, if you have any doubt go see ur vet
If you are talking about urinating, this is bad… He could have problems with his prostate or something else, get to a vet. If it is the other then he is constipated and you need to have him checked at a vet, especially if he is drinking plenty of water.
Either way- GET TO A VET.
