My Puppy Is Going In The Crate, Help!!??

I have a 3.5 month old Italian greyhound who keeps going wee wee in his crate. At first he went in his crate once in a while (mostly at night when he couldn’t hold it all night long), then I adjusted his feeding schedule and he was doing great for about two weeks only to regress and start going in his crate constantly. We made the crate smaller with a divider so I know thats not the problem. (We cannot make it any smaller or he wont fit in it). Sometimes he goes in the crate even when he’s been in there for only a short period of time, so I know thats not the problem either (we take him out to potty every hour-2 hours). He does go potty outside normally, unless he has just gone potty in the crate in which case he wont go outside. Anyways, I never had this problem with my other dog and we crate trained her the same way. What do I do? Help!!!

Make sure the crate is the correct size. If it’s too large a dog will eliminate him/herself on one end and sleep on the other. Also more frequent trips outside may be in order, don’t forget to praise when he goes outside…heck I still praise my adult house trained dogs when they go “potty” outside! Hope I helped, good luck!

First are you sure he doesn’t have any kind of medical problem or urinary tract infection. Second, his peeing maybe because he’s excited or stressed. He may have no control over that at least not until he’s a little older. See if you can tell when he’s urinating. Is it when he sees you? Or is it when he’s left alone and if so is he giving other indications of distress – constant crying or barking. I have a dog with severe separation anxiety that has the same problem.

this sounds like a simple case of the dog is confused! he is way too young to have bladder control anyway. my dog did this for almost a year my other dogs did not. they are all different and they all develop at their own rate. my dog finallly figured it out! it was frustrating as hell but patience and perserverance helped. praise him profusely when he goes outside and when he goes in the crate make your body language and tone of voice completely different and let him know you disapprove by showing him what you mean. dogs are great but patience is key

Sometimes a dog can have a slight bladder infection and you wouldn’t know it. Have him checked for that first. And while there, ask the vet what to do if it isn’t an infection. It sounds like you are doing all the right things.

I suggest only allowing him to go into his crate at night. That way he has no chance. So lock it during the day, and maybe get a blanket for him to sleep on during the day instead.

He could have a bladder infection.
My herbalist has recommended corn silk to help incontinence.
He will probably grow out of it. It’s probably just a stage.

The crate might be to big so he/she will pee in one place and sleep in the other maybe get a smaller crate?! or block it off

be patient, every dog is different, just like people, some babies potty train quickly, others don’t.

Well I’m definitely no an expert on dogs, but I was watching this show “It’s me or the dog” on animal planet and it’s a show about disobedient dogs and how to train them. Well anyways if you form a strong bond with your dog, they will sometimes use the restroom when your away because of anxiety or fear of you abandoning them.
A way you can stop this is with a training session where you put them in the room or crate walk out for a minute or two and come right back in; sooner or later they will pick up the fact that you won’t abandon them. Hopefully this helps some.

He’s too little to be made to wait for that long of a time. You have to help him by only putting him in the crate for a short period of time. One thing you might try to do is to take him to pee outside first give him time to wander and then bring him back inside and crate him for about 5 or 10 minutes. Each day do it for a longer time. Don’t forget to praise your puppy and be patient. He will learn!
Remember every dog may not be able to be crated. Good luck!
