Questions About The Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier?

My bf and I already have a 2-year-old Italian Greyhound and we just LOVE her. She is VERY socialized and has been around MANY other dogs & can even handle playing w/ my mom’s 8 month old boistrous lab puppy so she won’t be a problem.
My bf has fairly bad allergies and can’t even handle cats at all so I’ve been researching dogs that, like my IG, shouldn’t cause him trouble. I’ve been researching and thinking for a good 6 months now and I’ve narrowed it down to 2 dogs, the Basenji & the SCWT.
I want to know from YOU how easy are they to train? How well do they bond with you & your family? How easily do they pick up & react to your moods? How is the grooming & how DO you groom them?
How active are they? How do they play? And any funny sweet stories that would be great? Also anything else you feel I should know?
Thank you I REALLY need thorough answers on this one.
Also I live in Colorado, which would be better suited for our climate?

SCWTs are usually VERY friendly dogs, they are usually more on the hyper side (like most terriers) but they have a great tendency to be both people and dog friendly, from what I have seen is that they do tend to have some food aggression issues and the coat CAN be a problem for people with a busy schedule. If you keep it trimmed in the “puppy cut” then it should only need an occasional brushing.
A SCWT should do fine in your climate as long as its not left outdoors for a long period of time and has access to water.
The first SCWTs I meet actually came from a puppy mill at the shelter I volunteer at, four of the terriers were removed and brought to the shelter where they were examined and went through temperament tests. I helped work with them quit a few times and found them to be enjoyable, they were always happy and playful and loved to just run around with you and when they were tired they would just drop into your lap as if they were chihuahuas (but they are WAY heavier)
SCWTs, like any dog, can be a bit tough to train, you have to remember to be patient, they seem to pick up on moods pretty quickly and the ones I have meet have all seemed more than eager to lend a kind ear
    =)
Good luck on your choice, and please, look at some shelter dogs before you try a breeder, their are some great dogs that just need a chance

    Hello!
My dad has allergies and cant have cats either! I say that if you want a dog breed that has less sheding you should get a weaten teirrer or a poodle mix! They dont shed.
I would get a wheaten terrirer because they are meduim sized and every time im around one they are the sweetest thing. they seem to be quite yet playful

I had to laugh out loud seeing the words “Basenji” and “train” in the same sentence! If you want a trainable dog, don’t get a Basenji. They are little dickens!! They have some really neat qualities, but … being trainable isn’t something they’re really known for.
SCWT, the only thing I really don’t like about them is the beards. They drink, they dribble on you. And it’s sorta slobbery and gooshy and … I’m not into slobbery and gooshy when it comes to dogs. Some people are, I’m just not one of those people.
Based on your questions, I think you’d be happier with a SCWT. It’s going to be a more trainable dog, personable dog than the Basenji’s are. There will be more grooming involved, but they’ll also be more responsive to your moods and things like that.
