What Brand Of Food Is Best?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I’m thinking about getting a dog. Right now I’m leaning towards the greyhound. I’ve done lots of research about dogs, so I probably don’t need any training tips or anything. My only question is, what brand of food would you reccomend?

You’ll get lots of different answers about food here, but the best food for your dog is one that meets her health and nutritional needs. Nobody can access those for your dog but you.
We give our shih tzu Blue Buffalo. Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula (dry food) does not use animal by-products and their gluten-free recipes do not contain any artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Their food also does not have corn, wheat or soy, which have been known to trigger allergies.
You can go to the website: http://www.bluebuff.com and read more about the products they have. You can also request a free sample (and a $3 coupon).
Their treats and canned food were on the recall list so I don’t recommend those.

The best type of food for your dog is something that is all natural. DO NOT buy your dog food from a grocery store/Wal Mart. Instead, try going to a pet store or your vets office. You want to avoid ingredients such as: corn, and harmful by products, bone meal. There are a lot of variables that need to be taken into consideration also. Like, the dogs age, and activity level. Your best bet would be to go to your vet and ask for their advice. Remember not to give table scraps. This will produce un-pleasant side affects like loose stools, and begging to name a few.
Hi there,
I recently adopted a greyhound and feed her Advance Active. She gets 3 cups of that per day (half on morning and half in evening) as well as some treaties (uncooked chicken necks and wings, liver treaties etc). My vet recommended it to me and it was also the food that they fed her at the kennel where I adopted her. It is fantastic food. Has all the nutritional requirements so you don’t need to worry about your dog not eating right. Because it is high quality food, they don’t need heaps and heaps of it either which is great. It is a little more expensive than some of the other brands, but I think my baby is worth every cent.
I hope this helps
I’m a huge fan of Innova Evo myself.
When you adopt your dog, especially if you go with a greyhound, I would ask the rescue group about the specific needs of the breed and individual dog. I know a few people with greyhounds, and some of them have to feed their dogs a brand with more fibre than grainless foods like Evo can offer. One of my friends feeds her greyhound a raw meat diet with pulped vegetables and she never has problems with loose stool like our friends who feed dry rations. Another of my friends swears by the Kumpi brand for his greyhound, and even though the food contains corn, his dog rarely has gas and is always in beautiful coat.
Anyway, you might want to go by trial and error. Pick a few options and begin with the one you like best. If things don’t seem to be working after a month or two, try the next option on the list.
Kudos for pursuing the adoption option!
There is no “best” dog food, and every part of the country has different foods available. The tricks not to look for any one brand name, but to learn how to read a dog food label and determine for yourself if the food you are looking at is any good.
You can find tons of places online that will give you all the details of how to read the labels.
I’m a fan of Merrick brand wet & dry. Its rated pretty good and my dog, who recently went through some stomach issues can still eat it mixed with the prescription foods (any other brand I’ve tried upsets her tummy even when mixed).
I’ve heard wellness is very good as well but it is not readily available in my area.
Canidae ALS, Artemis, Solid Gold, Innova, Merrick, Wellness, Orijen, Taste Of The Wild, Nature’s Variety, California Natural, and pretty much anything on this list is great:http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_…
They’re all high in meat content and quality, which makes them excellent foods.
Best of luck!!! ♥
A holistic brand is best, but speaking speicifically and labelling one brand as best is difficult to do-it just depends on which one your dog does the best on.
A few good brands;
-Innova (regular Innova or EVO, both are great)
-Canidae
-Blue Buffalo
-Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul
-California Natural
-Wellness
Orijen, if you want to feed kibble.
Also, you can try innova, nature’s variety, Solid Gold…
No use of fillers, corn, and i think most of these are grain free.
I love canidae and chicken soup brands. Greyhounds are lovely, graceful dogs. My mother rescued an ex racer and she lived out her life in luxury.
The dry foods that are best for MY dogs:
Females: Canidae All Life Stages
Male: Taste Of the Wild High Praire Canine
Not all foods benefits all dogs the same.
