Which Dog Breeds Are Dumb?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I know which dog breeds are smart. But which ones are dumb.
And I’m not talking about dogs that are notoriously hard to train, like Beagles. There’s a difference. Beagles are intelligent, but they are just hard to train.
Which dogs are actually dumb? I’ve heard greyhounds are.
I’m just curious. I love dogs. <33

There is a huge difference between intelligence and train ability!
I think that any dog that can’t think for itself and will blindly do whatever some dumb-*** tells it to do is dumb!
I have Afghan Hounds, reported to be the dumbest breed, tell me, how dumb is a dog that can open any gate or door you put in front of it, opens the refrigerator, gets in the butter keeper and eats the butter, opens zip lock baggies without tearing them, and won’t jump off a cliff on command no matter how well trained?
There aren’t any dumb dog breeds. All breeds are very intelligent but in very different ways. Depends on what you want the dog to do.
Herding dogs as well the entire working group are going to be very different in their display of IQ than the toy group as an example.
Not any dog is hard to train. What is hard is getting the owner trained on how to train their dog.
A dog bred to work alongside man such as a lab for example will be easier to train than a dog bred for much different and more independent duties such as a chow for example. Both dogs are smart but in different ways and their training methods will be different. The approach will be different. The lab wants to please, the chow has to see what’s in it for him. Both breeds, with a proper trainer/handler can excel in many areas of obedience, agility and other.
Simply put there are no dumb dogs just stupid people who don’t know what they’re doing.
No breed is dumb…the breeds that tend to rank low on “doggie intelligence testing” are the breeds that are more independent/less trainable. Most all intelligence tests are based on how quickly a dog learns a command and how often the respond to it the first time after they have learned it. Independent breeds simply aren’t going to score well on this type of testing.
Greyhounds aren’t dumb, can be a little stubborn and the fact that they are sight hounds often makes recall very difficult.. When I first brought mine home he knew within ten minutes which was the ‘out’ door. Told off once for being on the couch, has never tried again in 7 years.. They are smart, they just move to their own beat.. You couldn’t have a nicer companion dog.
dalmations are stubborn and hard to train, but i dont know if that makes them “dumb”….maybe just really smart. they probably laugh at our foolishness- trying to teach them things like “shake a paw” lolhttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
Well, I think there is a difference between dumb, stubborn, and harder to train. I’ve heard that Afghan Hounds are not that trainable. Also, I can tell you from experience that Bulldogs and Basset Hounds aren’t the easiest, either.
No dog is dumb. They all have been bred to have different smarts and peeves and such. Just because some dogs aren’t as intelligent, doesn’t make them dumb.
I find any dog more intelligent than majority of “members” here.
More “human” as well.
The dumber the owner the dumber the dog
I’ve always heard that basset hounds aren’t the smartest dogs out there..but I’ve never had one, that’s just what I’ve heard.
theres no such thing as a dumb dog…just dumb owners =)
