Who Has Adopted A Greyhound?

I am doing some research on Greyhounds I am interested in adopting one but have to have some info to tell my mom and things.
1.After you got the dog home did it have behavior problems or separation anxiety?
2.Was it easy to train?
3.Did it develop health problems soon after?
4.Is it only possible to adopt retired racers?
I am not sure if these are the right questions to ask or not feel free to give me some more advice or some things your grey did.Oh yeah about question number four I want to adopt a retired racer I was just curios I have only seen retired racers on petfinder.That las one is pretty sh*tty.Sorry.

You are right to ask questions. Most people don’t do enough research before getting a pet.
1. Greyhounds are generally very easy going, well adjusted dogs. If you go through an adoption group, the dog will have lived in a foster home and been evaluated for any special needs or behavior issues, which are rare. It will also have gone through the adjustment period. They can have separation anxiety but there are tools (like a crate) and techniques that help with that. Most of them are content to sleep all day while you are gone.
2.Greyhounds are very eager to please you. They can be lazy and a little stubborn. But with some patience they are easy to train. Again, if they have been fostered, very little training is necessary.
3. Greys are a very healthy breed…. an ancient breed without any congenital defects. They do require dental care.. tooth brushing a few times a week and annual dental cleaning to maintain healthy teeth.
4. The greyhounds that are for adoption were bred for racing. Most of them raced. Sometimes a dog does not perform well and never makes it past the practice track and the owner turns it over to rescue, so I have seen dogs as young as 1 year old, that never officially raced come though rescue.

If you can, try to adopt through a rescue group. They will have events where you can go interact with the dogs and talk to people who have them. The dogs and your family are evaluated so the best possible match can be made. Plus you have a support network of knowledgeable people.

My grandparents had an adopted greyhound before. It was kind of scared of things, and didn’t know how to play with toys. But when it was introduced to our dog, it learned pretty quickly how to play, and knock over the trash and other dog things. I remember she was a really weird dog though. Like when she learned how to play, she would pick up a toy, and go crazy for a minute, then let it go and she was done for a while. But for the most part, she caught on pretty quickly. She never developed any health problems later and was always happy.

1. No it did not, it was scared for the first night but now he loves it here!
2. It wasn’t hard, I didn’t really have to do anything. I don’t even have to put a leash on him when we’re on walks…doesn’t beg, nothing.
3. No but I’ve only had him for a year so I don’t know.
4. Not sure….probably a whole lot of money…
my aunt adopted one. ‘poppy’ it’s really sweet and nice, she hasn’t had any problems with it. and it is very well trained. i think you can only adopt the retired racers, at least thats what she said. i guess unless you find ones at the pound…..
You can adopt a GREYHOUND you dummy, you can only ride them at a fair price.

My aunt actually adopted a retired racer. It was more like rescued it. The original owner wanted to put it to sleep! It was 2 and half years old! He was a beautiful dog and needed a big back yard to stretch his legs. When he felt like taking a nap on the couch he extended the whole full size couch (hope you have a loveseat as well you’ll need it!) The first 4 months he had a minor piddle problem but my aunt installed a doggie door on the back of the house and life was good. He was a very kind and loving dog and never snapped or snarled and a single treatrous child. He lived to be about 11 years old. His legs were starting to go on him and he was tired all the time, but he was so wonderful. Hope I could Help Good Luck
