Would They Get Along Or Would They Fight?

A few months ago we took a greyhound (4 years old, also a retired racer) from a rescue centre. He was very timid and scared of almost anything when we first took him home, especially of men – which led us to believe he was probably abused when in training. Now, he’s as bubbly as ever and probably is too happy now :p (however still scared of loud/sudden noises, or anything that would seem big and scary, but you would assume that’s normal for any dog). Although, he was very vicious towards any small animals and smaller dogs, actually killing 2 local pet cats and barking at smaller dogs. His behaviour is getting better towards smaller dogs though and doesn’t attack/dark at them any more, but still is quite intruiged by them.
We were thinking of getting another rescue dog, but a mut this time. They’re such fun dogs and I have heard that they can make great pets. My only concern is that would our current greyhound and a mut get along well?

We usually tell people to go opposite and younger. So since you have a 4 yr old male, try a 3 yr female or something like that. It usually will work itself out. There may be some growling even a little nipping but anything more then that is usually rare.

that’s odd greyhound are usually gentle dogs I’ve never heard of them attacking or killing other or animals
she might like the company but take things slowly introduce them somewhere neutral like the park or maybe you could take him to the shelter with you so there are professionals that can help you
what ever you decide to do i wish you the best of luck and hope everything works out for you and your greyhound.

    depends on both dogs temperments
i would see if you can set up a “playdate”in which you bring your dog to the shelter and have them sniff eachother and play in a grassy area, etc.
    see how the are
perhaps a small dog isnt a good idea- try a medium sized dog
my dog and cat get along great

Greyhounds have thousands of years of training to chase and kill small animals behind them. That’s what they do. Some greyhounds have a much higher prey drive than other greyhounds do. Your greyhound isn’t necessarily aggressive. Just a extra good hunter with a very high prey drive.
I have two greyhounds that grew up in the same exact way at the same track. One has an incredibly high prey drive and is interested in small animals (she would have attacked the cat across the street if I had given her another foot of lead). The other actually likes cats. But both of them were great runners having run over 100 races each.
Most greyhounds get along with other dogs but it seems you should stick with a larger dog, 35 lbs and up, to make sure. Make sure you take your greyhound with you to the shelter when you choose the dog to make sure they’ll get along.
Good luck and keep your grey on a leash outside unless he’s in a fenced yard. That should eliminate any further attacks.
