Thinking About Getting An Italian Greyhound?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I currently have a 5 month old male Chihuahua, he is fully vaccinated and set to be neutered within a month. He is great, 99.9% housebroken, knows some commands, is less bark-y than most chihuahuas and loves people and other animals. I have been thinking about getting a second dog. Another chihuahua is what I will most likely get, but I have also always loved Italian Greyhounds. My chihuahua will be about 5lb when he’s finished growing, so I know the Italian Greyhound would be bigger than him, but I don’t think that will be an issue.
My question is what are the main differences between the two? I don’t just want googled answers, I have done a lot of research, I want more first-hand experience if possible. I have read that IGs don’t like cold weather, rain, can be hyper and fragile, and are very hard to house train. However, I have heard most of that about chihuahuas, too, and have found that I haven’t had many problems. If I have been fine with a chihuahua, should I expect a tougher time with an IG still? Or should I be fine?
Getting My Dogs To Stay In Their Outdoor Doghouse?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
Hi all, this is my first time asking a question here. A bit of background: I have two SPCA dogs, the younger one is about a year and a half old German Shepherd (may have some greyhound), and the older one is about 2 and a half and is malamute/husky.
The older one is very furry and I don’t worry about him at all in this -30 cold. But the younger one doesn’t have much of an undercoat. They have a dog run in the back, and we keep them out there during the day.
We built them a doghouse big enough for the both of them, so that they could share their heat during the winter. Problem is, I’m not sure if they actually use it. Is there any product or anything I could use to make them like it? I’ve put hay inside so the ground isn’t freezing, plus I’ve sprinkled a few treats inside. They’re crate trained, so they’re not afraid of it, and we occasionally physically put them in and they don’t seem to mind, but I’m worried they don’t acutally use it…
Thanks!
I’m Getting A Greyhound Next Week, And I Have A Few Questions…?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
We are going to visit two different rescue groups next week, so I don’t have one picked out yet, but I would like to eventually register her with the CGC training. Does anyone know anything regarding GHs and this test? This will be our first GH, but I have been around several of them, and I know that they are very sweet and gentle dogs, and the ones I have spent time with seem like they would be very good material for therapy dogs. Does anyone have a greyhound that is registered with the CGC?
Also, because they are full bred, can I register her with the AKC. The websites of the places we are looking at don’t mention anything about the dogs being registered or coming with papers. They are retired racers, so it is rescue, but I would still like to register her if possible.
And lastly! I keep saying “her”, but we really don’t know yet. I am pretty sure that I want a female, but I am more concerned with a good dog. So, males v. females? Pros and cons… Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Ideas For A Large Dog Who Is Getting Bored?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
I own a 50lb greyhound/boxer mix who is fairly well behaved and in training to conquer the few things she struggles with (greeting people calmly). However, one issue we can’t seem to conquer is what seems to be her boredom. During the day she just lays around and sleeps a lot, but around 7:00pm she tends to get very wound up. Whines a lot, obviously wants us to play, and barks at us if we won’t play with her. However, when we play catch or anything else she gets quickly bored with it and wants something else. By the time she wants to move around (evening) we’re already exhauseted from the day. Any ideas on what we can do around the house to keep her occupied, or on how to make her more active during the day when we can play?
My 9 Month Greyhound Is Crate Trained Want To Get Her Out Of It So That She Can Join A New Dog We Are Getting?
Filed under Care & Training Q&As
My greyhound is crate-trained in that she goes in there when I am out (once or twice a week) for 3 hours and is clean. She sleeps by my bed during the night – which we are happy with. We are getting a new dog (a 10 month old greyhoundxgerman shepherd lurcher) in 2 weeks for company for her as she has slight seperation anxiety, although she does settle down in her cage usually – although neighbours said they heard howling the other day. Apparantly, the new dog does not require a crate.
Three issues
1. how do I get her out of the crate? – she is a bit chewy.
2. how do I settle the new dog in?
3. how do I ensure that they get on, particularly when left?
Thanks
