How Long Can A Dog Be Home Alone?

I want to adopt an older dog from the pound. Not a bull breed. It needs to be a small dog. Maybe 2-3 years, not a puppy. I work, like most people, so Im out from around 8:30 until 3:00. I don’t understand how people on here say you cant have a dog unless your home all day! Don’t people work and have dogs?? I don’t want to adopt like a 10 year old, because I adopted an older cat who I could only love for 4 years, then she had to be put down because she had cancer. :( So is there a breed of dog that can stay home for around maybe 7-8 hours a day? Would crate training be a good idea? Or would it be better to have it in the house, with a dog flap so it can go into the garden. Help? I did those dog breed quizzes and the border terrier came up 4 times, and other times I got things like the greyhound and Chihuahua. It must be good with cats, as I have a cat, and if they get along they might start liking eachother. This will be my first dog, and I really want something small, I dont want anything heavyer than around 20 lb. Thanks

How Do People Live With Dogs Peeing And Pooing Inside Their Home?

I have been watching Victoria Stilwell’s “It’s Me or the Dog” and I am amazed how people can live in a home with dogs peeing and pooing everywhere. I don’t mean puppies which are being trained. It is natural that they will have accidents. I am referring to fully grown dogs which should, if they had been properly trained, known better.
The show the other day was 2 Greyhounds (gorgeous dogs) which were gated in the kitchen overnight and every morning and when they returned home there was pee and poo all over the kitchen. Video footage showed the dogs walking through it and then jumping up onto the kitchen benches. How can people live like that? It makes my stomach turn just thinking about it. My own dogs have been trained to stay out of the kitchen altogether – let alone not peeing and pooing through the house.
The stench must be stomach turning in their homes.
How can they live with this every day of their lives?

How Do I Train Her Not To Bark When I Am Not Home?

My dog sticks to me like glue but she gets very sad when I have to leave her. When she is alone, even when locked in a room alone she barks and barks. She is a Doberman/Pointer/Greyhound mix so, as you can imagine, her bark is rather loud.
Do any of those gimmicks work? Is there any trick to get her to stop barking. It is hard for me to train her to stop when I can’t be in the room.
