I am in the process of purchasing a Bullmastiff puppy. She is right now 6 weeks old and will be coming home in two weeks. Her compainions in the house will be an Italian greyhound, 3 cats and my two daughters my hubby and I. Oudside animals to many to list here. Anyway I am trying to do my homework and have owned and own other bully breeds.
My main question is with people that have experience what do you feed yours. I was going to start her on Science diet large breed puppy or Nutro Naural choice Large breed puppy. With some cooked chicken or possibly some canned food to start. I have been trying to do my homework on them and I am seeing alot of DONT feed Commercial foods to this breed etc.. From experience these foods have always been great for my other larger dogs. Suggestions please..
Also I havent seen much on house breaking I usually crate train but have been seeing of ton of they hate to be alone etc.. She cant be harder to house break then my Itailian greyhound!! Thanks

Questions About The Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier?

My bf and I already have a 2-year-old Italian Greyhound and we just LOVE her. She is VERY socialized and has been around MANY other dogs & can even handle playing w/ my mom’s 8 month old boistrous lab puppy so she won’t be a problem.
My bf has fairly bad allergies and can’t even handle cats at all so I’ve been researching dogs that, like my IG, shouldn’t cause him trouble. I’ve been researching and thinking for a good 6 months now and I’ve narrowed it down to 2 dogs, the Basenji & the SCWT.
I want to know from YOU how easy are they to train? How well do they bond with you & your family? How easily do they pick up & react to your moods? How is the grooming & how DO you groom them?
How active are they? How do they play? And any funny sweet stories that would be great? Also anything else you feel I should know?
Thank you I REALLY need thorough answers on this one.
Also I live in Colorado, which would be better suited for our climate?

My Roommate’s Dog And Some Questions?

My roommate has a 3 year old greyhound that he got from a rescue shelter. We’ve shared a house for over a year now, and the dog has been there the whole time. He is a good dog, but has seperation issues and has to be crated when no one is home. I have a real deep genuine love of animals and think I have an intuition about how they feel or what makes them happy, but also realize they need discipline. Here’s the issue-
His dog now treats me like the alpha male of the house, because I pay attention to him. I can’t help the fact that I actually walk him and take him places in the car, and realize when he has to go out. My roommate used to wonder why he would pee on the downstairs rug after letting him know he had to go out. He makes him wait, thinking it shows dominance or something. He trys to do all of these “correct” training methods like Cesar Milan shows, without actually giving the dog the exercise or change of pace and scenery he needs to be happy. He has been sleeping on the bed at night, mostly with me,but now he wants to try and stop that again because he snaps when he gets woken sometimes (nothing new, except he doesn’t do it to me anymore……I don’t strike him, though. I firmly say “HEY! NO! and look at him). My roommate has this idea that letting the dog on the bed and stuff says to the dog that he is equal to you,and all this other crap. He thinks he knows how to discipline the dog properly, but I’m pretty sure crating a dog for 12 hours straight and sticking him in a closed room with a space heater isn’t the best method. I felt so bad for the poor thing that I would actually come home when I could, because I was closer than anyone else.
Anyways, I just can’t help but feel that if he spent more time caring for his dog and spending time with him, that he would get the same respect. I know he loves his dog, but he has done so many things the wrong way, yet can’t understand why he responds to me. How should I deal with this?

I’m Getting A Greyhound Next Week, And I Have A Few Questions…?

We are going to visit two different rescue groups next week, so I don’t have one picked out yet, but I would like to eventually register her with the CGC training. Does anyone know anything regarding GHs and this test? This will be our first GH, but I have been around several of them, and I know that they are very sweet and gentle dogs, and the ones I have spent time with seem like they would be very good material for therapy dogs. Does anyone have a greyhound that is registered with the CGC?
Also, because they are full bred, can I register her with the AKC. The websites of the places we are looking at don’t mention anything about the dogs being registered or coming with papers. They are retired racers, so it is rescue, but I would still like to register her if possible.
And lastly! I keep saying “her”, but we really don’t know yet. I am pretty sure that I want a female, but I am more concerned with a good dog. So, males v. females? Pros and cons… Any suggestions?
Thanks!

A Few Questions About Clicker Training A Dog?

October 19, 2009 by admin
Filed under Care & Training Q&As

We’re adopting a two year old Retriever/Greyhound from our local humane society. I am not certain as to the level of training she has and want to try out clicker training with her.
I can’t seem to find definitive answers to the following:
1. When you click and treat, do you also praise? Should I be saying, “Good girl!” while I am giving her the treat?
2. Do you correct at all with clicker training? I realize it is positive reinforcement, but does that mean that one does not correct? No saying “NO!” or anything like that?
Thanks to all.
