I’m At My Wit’s End With My New Puppys House Training! They Won’t Go Outside!?

I just got two Italian Greyhound pups who are 3 months old. I didn’t know this before, but I’m pretty sure they’re from a puppy mill. I’m looking into it. They were raised in a kennel from birth, have never been outside and never even been able to run around on the floor. Everything is all new to them. I’m trying so hard to be patient. I won’t bring them back to that place, so I’m really trying to work with them. They’re well behaved , very loving, sweet, but the one thing that is their downfall- they won’t pee or poop outside! I do the thing where I’ll keep them kenneled, take them out, if they don’t go, I bring them in, kennel them, take them out again in 15 minutes or so. Most dogs won’t pee where they sleep… these WILL. THey stink and their kennel stinks. I feel like crying! My kids and I are very attached to them, but I have a 2 year old who’s always walking on the floor. They just don’t get it when we’re outside. It’s freezing MN here, so they just sit and shake and cry. Help!

Crate Training Question….?

Filed under Care & Training Q&As

I have 3 dogs…. And I have crate trained them all. 2 of them are fine with the crate, my third doesn’t mind being in the crate, but he poops & pees in it, and then lays in it. It is really gross!! At night, he is fine, but it is while I am at work that he defacates all over the crate and hangs out in it. I usually leave him in his crate for a max of about 5 hours, so he should be able to hold it. He is potty trained and rarely ever has an accident in the house, but the minute you put him in the crate, he pees. When I go to wash his blanket, I find there is a bunch of poop in it.
I have been told to get him a smaller crate, which I have done twice, it didn’t help.
I have been told to remove the blanket, but I can’t because he shivers. (He is an italian greyhound)
Someone help!

Advice Needed For 10 Week Old Pup. Crate Training And Biting.?

I have an 11 week old labrador/greyhound puppy who has a few issues we hope to solve with crate training, but as i am new to this concept, I would like to ask a little advice.
Firstly, I am struggling to find some good info on toilet training with a crate. My vet advised to have some puppy pads in the crate overnight with the pup as well as food and water but alot of the websites i have read advise against this. What is the best method?
We are mainly trying this due to some bad chewing behaviour. I know she is only young and it is in her nature to chew, but she has pulled a significant amount of wall paper off the wall so i am a little concerned about that. Obviously wall paper is not a recommended diet for a pup so i worry about her swallowing some, hence one more reason for the crate.
As far as biting goes, she jumps up and snaps at our hands alot. She has a tendency to crouch down with her back end in the air and growl, she will then bark and lunge up to bite. A friend insists this is her challenging authority so i would like to hear thoughts on controlling this behaviour.
She is a lovely dog and some of her training is going well, she just has some destructive tendencies that i would like some constructive advice on correcting please.
Thanks for helping

Do Greyhounds Like To Go For Long Runs, Such As Training For Marathons With Their Owners, Or Only Shorter Runs?

I like what greyhounds look like and the idea of saving a dog. I like to run long distances. Do greyhounds like to run long distances with their owners or just shorter distances? How far do they like to run each day? I can’t have one right now but when I get to the right place and time, I would really like to look into having one or two greyhounds.

Can You Help With Litter Box Training My 1-year-old Dog? Should I Be Concerned About Cats?

October 20, 2009 by admin

I have a 13 month old Italian Greyhound who is very good at going outside for toileting, but I may be moving to a small apartment and I am considering box training him for convenience and his comfort during possible longer hours and cold weather. When he was a puppy he used puppy pads, but his best buddy always tore them up (and he could have been involved too, but I am not sure). I am aware that if my dog eats litter he can become very ill – and I would like to avoid that. Are there any other suggested materials (I have thought of wood shavings or cedar chips, but have to reference of whether it would work and possible ill effects or such) besides paper, puppy pads, and litter that I could use? Also, if he were to live with cats while being box trained, how would you suggest I teach him the difference between the boxes? Is it possible to put them in the same room wihtout any conflict?
Thanks!

A Few Questions About Clicker Training A Dog?

October 19, 2009 by admin
Filed under Care & Training Q&As

We’re adopting a two year old Retriever/Greyhound from our local humane society. I am not certain as to the level of training she has and want to try out clicker training with her.
I can’t seem to find definitive answers to the following:
1. When you click and treat, do you also praise? Should I be saying, “Good girl!” while I am giving her the treat?
2. Do you correct at all with clicker training? I realize it is positive reinforcement, but does that mean that one does not correct? No saying “NO!” or anything like that?
Thanks to all.

Clicker Training A Dog?

October 19, 2009 by admin
Filed under Care & Training Q&As

I have a 1 year old italian greyhound/chihuahua mix. He knows many tricks such as sit, lay down, shake, high five, play dead, roll over. The thing is, it sometimes takes him a while to do these tricks. I think Clicker training would be a good way to teach him to do these tricks better so as soon as I say the command, he does it. Sometimes now, I have to pat the floor for him to lie down, and it gets annoying. I was wondering if clicker training will still work even though he knows some tricks already. Will I confuse him if I “back track”?
Also, what treats are the best for clicker training, because I know you have to use a lot but I don’t want him getting overweight.
Are clickers sold at Pet Supermarket?
Any other info? thanks!

Training An Anti Social Dog?

I have a 6 year old Parsons Russel Terrier who we got from a breeder at 15 months.. he was supposed to be a show/stud dog so he wasn’t neutered until about 18 months.. anyways, although he spent his first 15 months living in a kennel with other dogs he is VERY afraid (not the best word) whenever dominant dogs are around and he fights with submissive dogs. To be honest we haven’t done much to fix it since its never been a problem, and otherwise he is a saint (don’t give me cr@p about it.. it didn’t effect us or him, we let it slide) He is much better around female dogs then male, but basically they are all problems.
Anyways, right now my family is thinking about getting a second dog (not a puppy, probably greyhound) and we’re worried about how Ace will re act to this, besides him being very attached to me we don’t know if he will ever get used to having another dog around all the time.
I am the his primary “trainer” and do lots of work with him, along with providing the largest part of his care so i would like to work on getting him used to other dogs before we try to bring one into the house. Any tips on doing this?
-i am willing to go to a pro. trainer to help this, but i’d like to try it on my own first if at all possible.
